Masters of Photography-Yousuf Karsh

Yousuf Karsh was born in Mardin, Ottoman Empire (present-day Turkey). He was born December 23, 1908 and died July 13, 2002. He began studying photography in 1928. He photographed famous people.

We chose Karsh because we were fascinated by his photography of famous people that rose to fame during the 20th century. We were inspired by his drive and his career success in his lifetime. While working on this project, we came to appreciate his skill in posing his subjects and his use of lighting.

I edited these photos by completely reducing the vibrancy and saturation to make them black and white. I also increased the contrast, and made the blacks and whites darker.

Composition Review - 3 Rules

I picked picture 8. It demonstrates our three rules of composition: depth, simplicity, and aspect ratio. There is depth in that you can see past the house and out onto the horizon. It is simple- there isn't much in the picture other than the house. Its aspect ratio envelops the subject well.

Third Photo Assignment, My Third Rule

Simplicity
Simplicity in photography requires that we have lone focus on the subject of the portrait. Details are not necessary.

Three Rules:
1. Aspect Ratio
2. Depth
3. Simplicity
